Jacques Lacan was a French psychoanalyst, 1901 - 1981. Trained as a psychiatrist, he abandoned the profession in favour of psychoanalysis in the early thirties. After publishing his paper on the Mirror Stage in 1949, for which he is probably best known to the general public, in the early fifties Lacan embarked on a project he called the 'Return to Freud'. JACQUES LACAN has proven to be an important influence on contemporary critical theory, influencing such disparate approaches as feminism (through, for example, Judith Butler and Shoshana Felman), film theory (Laura Mulvey, Kaja Silverman, and the various film scholars associated with "screen theory"), poststructuralism (Cynthia Chase, Juliet Flower MacCannell, etc.), and Marxism (Louis Jacques Lacan Psychoanalysis - Lacan is another psychoanalyst who reworks on Freud in connection with poststructuralist theories, which refuses the concept of objectivity and, as Lacan would want us to believe, that subjectivity is the truth The French theorist Lacan has always been called a 'literary' theoretician.
